Congratulations, Nick. I saw this and thought - well, yeah, Nick's in the best of the best, of course! And this workshop looks fantastic - what a place to see Burchfield's work and meet and learn from some of the best (two of my faves, Mary Whyte and you know who). Hope to see you workshopping around the world this year and next.

Cristina - thanks for the visit and nice words!

Rhonda - thanks and it looks like a beautiful art center. Before I was contacted about this, I had been discussing Charles Burchfield with WKM, who's a fan. Next thing i knew...

Carlos - muchas gracias :)

That building - interesting design.. will they be having watercolor services or workshops? Who's the head Pope these days? Well you certainly are in good company and you have proven that over the years. Nicholas I always enjoy viewing your painting of the young gent below the sign - from the days you globe trotted around the Caribbean. I wish you the best as this year gathers steam - may the watercolor furies be on their best behavior!

The workshop sounds amazing but so far away. I don't even know where Buffalo is. I am however familiar with Charles Burchfield and I've met Mary Whyte... so it can't be that hard to find can it? (((chuckles))) Great stuff Nick. Congrats!

I know you are a master in paintings like this. Why don’t you try to take wc to the next level. The “One O'Clock Jump” is an excellent start……..oh and about that vintage bobber, life is too short to think about dying my friend!

Bill - it wasn't long after we were talking about Burchfield that I got the call on this one. Impressive to have a whole building named after oneself, and I daresay there will be a WKM museum one of these days- or at least a wing at the Institute. (which institute, you ask? ha ha)

Jean - I haven't been to Buffalo in many moons. I was four, I think, and the snow drifts were considerably taller than I. A dark night, a bus, a corner room at the YMCA. The weather, mode of transport, and accomodations will be different this time.

Rob - great to hear from you. Honestly, I haven't started trying yet. But I will. :) I could use some inspiration from a certain great artist who has been laying too low! 1:00 Jump is an older piece, put it up there for yucks - it still reminds me of the Count. I'd love a 60s Triumph bobber almost as much as I'd be scared to ride it.

Congratulations, Nick. It is a fantastic painting and the recognition is well deserved.

Leslie - it's impossible (and possibly harmful) to grade or rank art, so it all has to be kept in perspective. Lots of deserving art, but also lots of cronyism and politics. I think it was Mark Twain who said "better to deserve honors and not have them, than to have them and not deserve them" !

Hi Nick, I love this piece and its positivity, the upward perspective, the color and luminous light... Fantastic figuration with an enigmatic gesture that I can't quite fathom and therefore find attention-grabbing and thus all the more intruiguing. While such artful figuration on and of its own could carry the entire piece you've somehow miraculously woven into this an equally captivating interplay of articulate spaces incredibly balanced in form placement, weighting, ..and all with a paradoxical liquid-counterpoint of freeform watercolor that only a master of aquamedia could ever achieve!! Brilliant piece imho, best wishes and congrats on all your many awards and successes.. Keep these works flowing,, cheers and best wishes from the land down under, wayne

Jane - sorry to be so late in responding...I use Da Vinci masking fluid, but also like the other brands OK. Ridiculous how expensive the stuff is, it's nice to get it from the sponsor!

Wayne - you've once again imbued me with more positive artistic qualities than actually exist! You have been missed on the blog scene. True story: yesterday I was googling watercolors and out of a mass of countless images one immediately stood out as something really special. I clicked on it, and not surprisingly it was a WRoberts! One I had never seen before (despite many hours immersed in your website), and it reminded me that we've probably only seen the tip of the iceberg where your genius is concerned. Thank you for the visit and the generous comments!
