2012 Shanghai Biennial Judging Pt. 1

Phase 1 of the judging for the 2012 Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolor Biennial is complete. Judges Alvaro Castagnet (UR) , Xidan Chen (CH), Xiejun Chen (CH), Janine Gallizia (FR), Tony Hunt (UK), Ong Kim Seng (SG), and Nicholas Simmons (US) reviewed 1200 entries from the international field,  pre-screened from over 4000, selecting 127. There remains over 5000 entries from the Chinese field, totaling over 10,000 entries in all, from 61 countries. Easily the largest watercolor event, ever.

Phase 2 takes place at the end of August, and the opening is September 26.

Coinciding with the judging was the opening of Janine Gallizia's solo exhibition at the Quanhua Watercolour Art Gallery. See the special group photo at the end with an astonishing array of international watercolor talent, including Chinese megamasters Hou Wei and Liu Yi. More photos on Facebook, and upcoming in Art of Watercolour magazine.

As someone who hates to travel, I can enjoy this vicariously through you, Nick. Looks like a meeting of the great minds in watermedia today :) Will look forward to reading about it more in the magazine.

Rhonda - the novelty of travel wore off for me a long time ago, right around 9/11. But it's fun to meet up with friends in far away exotic places, and have the opportunity to check out the best of what's happening. 3 more trips to China this year, ought to have some vocabulary down by that time. shey-shey!

Stan - lots of judging this year, I'm warmed up. :) Saw some really killer work on your blog!

Has got to be the best overall judging experience - judging by the pictures! They sure do it up right...

Nick, great to hear about your trip. Oh to get a chance to see the best watercolours from around the world while hanging out with friends. Can it get better :)

Nancy - I don't know of another show that sends a bunch of people halfway around the world just for the judging - twice. I understand the opening will be even bigger than last time, and that was quite an event (I missed it).

Rajeev - I agree! I was blown away by a lot of the work, and we haven't seen the invited artists or the Chinese artists yet.
